Dave Murrow has spent 30 years researching, proposing, designing, and operating space exploration missions. His fruitful career has included 7 flight missions, numerous future architecture studies, and business strategy work across the NASA space portfolio. He received awards for his work on Galileo, Cassini, Mars 98, Stardust, and Genesis. He has been involved in future planning for Human Space Flight, notably for future Orion mission to the Moon and Mars. He has engaged in public outreach through TV and radio interviews, conference papers and public presentations. A native of Colorado, Dave has been active in community activities, professional and economic development organizations. He has been married for 28 years, and is the father of 2 daughters currently studying at the University of Colorado.
Mr. Murrow received his BS (Aerospace Engineering, Honors) from the University of Colorado in 1984. He then attended The University of Texas at Austin on a University Fellowship, and received an MS (Aerospace Engineering) in 1987. During his graduate studies, Dave also worked at the UT Center for Space Research in Earth gravity model development, complementing his thesis research on spacecraft orbit determination. In 1987 he joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and was on the navigation team for the Galileo launch and early cruise phase, including Venus and Earth flybys. His work also included orbit determination analysis for NASA’s first-ever Asteroid flyby, atmospheric probe delivery, and the Galilean satellite tour. He then spent several years as the Cassini Mission System Engineer, developing requirements, scenarios and spacecraft operational concepts to maximize science return. He was then the Mission Design lead for the Mars '98 Project, and was the launch manager for three successful launches between December 1998 and February 1999 (Mars Climate Orbiter, Mars Polar Lander, and Stardust). He joined Ball Aerospace in 2000, leading their Planetary Science Advanced Programs activities during the Deep Impact and Kepler development. After NASA’s 2004 rollout of the Vision for Space Exploration, he added Human Space Flight to his portfolio. He is currently a Senior Business Development Manager for Lockheed Martin. Working for Lockheed Martin, Dave has pursued and won NASA business, developed strategies for beyond LEO human exploration, and helped to integrate their human and robotic space flight business areas.
